Tamil 'Well Woman' Pilot Scheme
In partnership with Well Woman Workshops, ATP-UK is currently developing a culturally sensitive pilot programme to benefit Tamil women; focusing especially on women aged over 30 years who, for many reasons, are feeling cut off from the world; women who feel like a change is needed to their daily routine and who want to set new personal goals, but who don’t want to do it alone. It will be designed to boost their confidence, self-esteem and self image; to empower them to realise their potential as valuable contributors to society. The training is also being designed with the intention that, in the future, Tamil women will themselves be trained to act as course facilitators and mentors.
The hugely successful Well Women programme encourages women to be outward looking and giving to others. Our version will be especially tailored to appropriately respond to the needs, pressures and changes that affect the Tamil community in particular. The course will empower the women so that they can make positive changes to their circumstances by using the tools, relationships and signposting opportunities provided by the programme of workshops. The Well Women approach focuses on holistic self development, looking at the social, physical, emotional, spiritual, vocational aspects of home life. Combining structured learning and support, our Tamil women will learn together in an unthreatening, non-judgemental environment (usually someone’s home) where they can feel safe, accepted and supported. The work groups are small and intimate, with no more than 10 women per programme.
The pilot course is being funded by the Faith in Lewisham Fund.
