ATP-UK Supplementary School Programme
Our 6 month pilot for the Supplementary School Programme, begun last October, has continued to go from strength to strength. With the skilled help of two teachers, we are offering literacy classes for children from years 1 – 3, teaching 30 children who come from 12 schools from within the London Borough of Lewisham: the children have been selected by their schools as pupils who would most benefit from this type of support. The lessons take place on Wednesdays & Thursdays from 4 – 6pm, at St. Saviour’s R.C Primary School, 10 Bonfield Road, Lewisham, SE13 6AL. This pilot project was the outcome not only of the numerous verbal requests personally received, but also from the results of our extensive Needs Assessment carried out last year; the results showed that there was a real need for supplementary educational support of this type for Tamil children in Lewisham.
For ATP-UK, as with all of our projects, we intend to take a holistic approach to this project; developing what we currently offer, so that, in the future we can help the child, not only with literacy but with other areas of intellectual, emotional and physical development. Our aim is to be able to invite the children, with the support and permission of their parents, and take them from their 1st year of primary education through to their last.
