'Family Learning Project' Launch
The Association of Tamil Parishioners UK, in partnership with South London Tamil Welfare Group (Lead Partner) successfully held the launch of the Family Learning Project, (funded by the Big Lottery from 2008-2013) on Friday 24th October 2008.
It was attended by various dignitaries including the Chair of Lewisham Council Mr. Barrie Anderson who symbolically launched the project by cutting a flower garland prepared for the occasion.
This joint initiative is unique, as it is the first time the above two voluntary organisations have come together to work for the Community, with the support of mainstream agencies such as, schools, children's centers, PCT's, libraries etc. This will underpin what is at the heart of the Government Agenda: The Welfare of Children and Families.
The launch has created a wide interest in the community, and we are now negotiating with local schools so as to provide family learning opportunities for the Tamil Community in Lewisham.
Over the next 5 years, we will further engage families and children with diverse approaches to learning in order to enhance their skill sets, employability, and family relationships. Our purpose is to improve their self-confidence and enable them to access mainstream services, thus strengthening community cohesion. The core aim of the project is:
- a.To provide insight to parents as to how their children are taught and enable them to support their children's learning
- b. To offer parents and children quality time to learn together helping to cultivate strong family relationships.
- c. To build strong and effective partnerships with local agencies and other community organisations.
